Overview: This semester, the meetings were facilitated by Dr. Lourdes D. Follins and the group met three times. Most, if not all of the previous members of the D-FIG have returned. Even after being in existence for a year, members continue to say that they get “so much from being in the group”: support, validation, concrete information about re-appointment and tenure, and coping strategies. In addition, group members have shared how they address issues of diversity in the classroom.
Readings for the semester:
We continued to the Microaggression and Marginality: Manifestation, Dynamics, and Impact book by Derald Wing Sue. Members and interested parties could get a free copy of the readings at KCTL; just let Janine Palludan know that you are using it for this group. We read the following chapters for the following meetings:
3/20: Ch. 3, Microaggressions and the Life Experience of Latina/o Americans
4/24: Ch. 10, Sexual Orientation and Transgender Microaggressions: Implications for Mental Health and Counseling
5/15: Ch. 13, Religious Microaggressions in the US: Mental Health Implications for Religious Minority Groups
NB: While it is *ideal* that you read the chapters, please do not let the fact that you have not done the reading keep you from attending. Remember, our main reasons for meeting are discussion, problem-solving, and providing information and support to one another as under-represented faculty.
