Overview: Dr. Kevicha Echols and Dr. Juan Morales-Flores became the new co-facilitators of the DFIG, taking the place of Dr. Lourdes Follins.  Dr. Echols and Dr. Morales-Flores are responsible for organizing the meetings, planning the agenda, selecting reading materials, and updating the wiki page. We have four meetings for the spring 2013 semester 3/12, 4/9, 4/30 & 5/21.

In the first meeting Dr. Morales-Flores and Dr. Echols introduced themselves as the new facilitators.  A new meeting time and day was established. Suggestions on how to best move forward with the DFIG was discussed. Ideas for new activities within the group were offered, such as using films, new book suggestions, and possible events that the DFIG could sponsor on campus.

We welcomed a new member to the group.  Another group member shared information about their presentation (along with two other faculty) given at the CUNY Minority Faculty Conference.  The presentation was about the creation of the Diverse Faculty Interest Group and its role at KBCC.  She found it to be a rewarding experience.  Their presentation was well received by those in attendance, including KBCC President Regina Peruggi.
As part of the meeting we discussed the article titled: Factors Contributing to Faculty Incorporation of Diversity Related Content by Matthew J. Mayhew and Heidi E. Grunwald.  We reviewed the research findings and procedures and connected the information in the article with our own individual professional experiences as under represented faculty members.  We also discussed ways we incorporate diversity issues in our own courses.
April 30, 2013
Based on the previous meeting we decided to have group members bring an activity that is used in their course which addresses diversity/inclusion issues.  Each group member shared their activity and offered one another feedback.

Our last meeting was an end of year soiree. We discussed plans for the fall 2013 semester and decided it may be best to change the meeting time since it was feasible for only a few members.    It was agreed that we could revisit the book  Microaggression and Marginality: Manifestation, Dynamics, and Impact book by Derald Wing Sue that was used in the first year of the DFIG, for the fall 2013 semester.
